I think our relationship with plants is spiritually connected. Think about it. After retirement, most people become plant enthusiasts, and gardening evolves from a hobby to daily meditation. However, with our modernization and materialistic lifestyle, space and time for plants often lacking. Modern problems require modern solutions, and with the limitations of space and time, multiple modern tools have been invented.
I have limited knowledge about gardening, but with a bit of research, I found out that snake plants are very easy to maintain as a beginner. With that knowledge, I collected pothos, a spider plant, two snake plants, and a rubber plant. All of them are indoor plants since my home doesn’t get enough direct sunlight. Surprisingly, the very low-maintenance snake plant was the first to die, but the other four are still thriving on my balcony and table. One doesn’t have to be a hardcore fan of plants to be considered a plant lover. These gift ideas are more from a receiver’s perspective than a giver’s, as I am also a newbie and would love to receive these as gifts.
Terrarium Kit/Terrarium
If you are a plant enthusiast yourself and thinking of giving gifts to another person like you, terrariums are a classy, elegant, and lovely eco-friendly gift idea. Creating another world of greenery in a small glass container with stones, plants, and soil is artistic. Terrariums are a very trendy art form. I would consider it more art than gardening, as it requires an eye for beauty and creativity. Decoration ideas here are completely based on your imagination. Terrarium kits are also readily available now.
Gardening Tool Set
Includes basic gardening tools like trowels, shovels, rake sets, etc. A user-friendly gift for beginners who don’t have equipment.
Gardener’s Tool Seat
Working in the garden while bending the knee or with back pain is uncomfortable. In our home, grandparents spend most of their time in the greenery. A seat with a tool holder can be comfortable for them. This is a simple yet thoughtful gift for elderly persons especially.
Plant Grow Kit
For someone who doesn’t have deep knowledge about how to grow a plant from seed to baby plant to mature plant, a plant grow kit works wonders. Gift a grow kit to someone passionate about plants. Grow kits come with everything a plant needs, so all that’s required is watering. Flower grow kits, succulent grow kits, and various plant kits solve the knowledge and execution problems, making them a thoughtful gift for plant lovers.
Bonsai Growing Kit
Bonsai is one of the oldest and most expensive Japanese art forms of growing trees in containers. The history behind bonsai is fascinating. It’s not easy to master this art without knowledge and lifelong practice. Currently, bonsai growing kits are a great addition and can be an elegant gift idea.
Soil Moisture Meter
This measures soil moisture, helping you know when to water. If I had this moisture meter, perhaps my snake plant wouldn’t have died. As a beginner, I was told to water every 10–12 days, but weather and other factors can vary the watering needs. A soil moisture meter is a must-have for every gardener, but for beginners like me, this is a detailed and practical gift.
Plant Markers
Just like bookmarks are book accessories, plant markers serve the same purpose for plants. They beautify gardens by identifying plant names written on small wooden pieces. Plant markers make a great addition to any plant gift set.
Plant Propagation Tubes
Plant propagation tubes come in various designs, making them more of a home decor or terrarium item than a gardening tool. These glass tubes are mostly used for the initial stages of baby plant growth. They can also serve as wall planters or living room decor. Giving these to a home decor lover with a fondness for greenery would be lovely.
Painted/Customized Pots
To decorate the greenery area of a home, designed pots are the most visible items, in my opinion. Locally, finding well-designed, affordable planters and pots can be rare. Hand-painted pots and planters make the best gifts for the garden-savvy person in your life. A simple pot with a few brushstrokes of color can turn into an amazing decorative item. I’ve bought some plain pots and painted them at home—they look amazing! Online marketplaces also have cute, differently shaped pots and planters available.
Watering Globes
I would call watering globes “plant jewelry.” Cute duck-shaped or globe-shaped watering globes are available online. How do they work? A watering globe is filled with water and inserted into the soil. The water slowly seeps into the roots, and when the soil becomes damp enough, the globe starts to fill with soil. This is a good way to ensure regular watering while also being a stylish gift for plant lovers.
Guide Book/Journal
A good plant guidebook is a helpful gift for a newbie like me, offering step-by-step guidance. Also, some of us love keeping a journal for our gardening journey to track the growth of our plants. Personally, I would love a gift like this.
Bird Nest
Cute little nests add a natural look to the materialistic feel of a house balcony. I have a round-shaped one. I once considered adding some artificial eggs for decoration as well.
Bird nests, plant markers, and watering globes together make a well-styled plant gift set.
Grow Bulb
For homes like mine, a grow bulb works as an alternative to sunlight. Though direct sunlight cannot be replaced, a grow bulb helps improve photosynthesis for houseplants. It’s a “better-than-nothing” type of item. Help your loved ones grow plants better by gifting them this.
