Social media is full of self-love and self-care content, but in reality, how much do we truly love ourselves and do something solely for ourselves? My therapist advises me to do activities just for myself, enjoying alone time. It’s tough, though.
In the context of gifting culture, why is the recipient always someone else? Why not yourself? Be both the giver and the recipient. When giving something to others, you think about their choices, occasions, and preferences—do the same for yourself. There’s a thin line between self-love and self-obsession, though. From time to time, treat yourself to get through a hectic day at work or take a little walk in nature to relax your mind. Sometimes, take a break from all the chaos around you. Slowing down is also self-love—not forcing yourself to constantly bear the pressure life imposes on you.
Plan dates occasionally, just like you do for your partner. Take yourself shopping, to the movies, or to a café. A solo tour can be healing and often works best to help you find yourself in the process. I used to find it difficult to go anywhere alone—not because of fear but because of the fear of getting bored. I always had to find someone to accompany me everywhere. Why was that? Because I wasn’t used to my own company. But over time, this practice helped me work through many emotions and became a kind of medicine.
Gift yourself your favorite dress, digital products, or a self-care kit. Take a day off to relax at a spa or explore your city on a solo tour.
Journaling is one of the best practices and is often suggested in therapy. Think about the handwritten notes and letters we write for others to make them feel appreciated. Write such letters to yourself for the same purpose.
On occasions such as birthdays, Christmas, anniversaries, and others, buy a gift for yourself first, then for others. On your birthday, rather than waiting for your partner or friends to wish you first or plan a surprise, be the first to celebrate yourself.
How can a search engine possibly have the best ideas for gifts for yourself? Think about what you need or want and fulfill that wish—even if you have the weight of the world’s responsibilities on your shoulders. Being kinder, more mindful, and feeding your soul might be the best ways to gift yourself.
